The Cat With One Eye

Another lovely afternoon at the Humane Society of West Michigan! I keep finding myself torn and not sure what to do while I’m there. Should I take as many cats photos as I can or spend more one-on-one time with each cat? Today I tried to get as many kitties in as possible, so unfortunately I don’t have much to report about their personalities.

Nels is a 2 month old male and is ADOPTED! I took his photo because he was so unique with his curled ears. Everyone was (understandably) going gaga over him.

Emma is a 1 year old female and was the most vocal of all the kitties I took pictures of today. She was demanding attention from anyone and everyone. Her fur is so short I thought she had been shaved at some point. Turns out it is au naturale.

Curtain is a 2 month old male. His name cracks me up. I imagine trying to name him was an “I love lamp” scenario.

Cecil is a 1 year old male. Poor guy looks like he has been kicked in the head by a mule. He just looks a little “off” haha. But he is very sweet.

Benjamin is a 4 month old male kitten. He is very sweet and a pushover. He was getting bullied by a 3 month old kitten that was half his size…

Sam is a 3 month old female kitten. She was Benjamin’s bully! She was sweet to me but growled at Benjamin. Drama drama drama. She loves to play.

Zana is a friendly 3 year old female.

Scarlet is a 1 year old female. She has a cute little folded ear!

Autumn is a 1 year old female. There are 2 types of cats that are hard to get photos of: the super scared ones and the overly friendly ones. Autumn is the latter. She was climbing my legs, bumping against me, and I could barely get far enough away to take her picture. She has the LOUDEST purr I’ve ever heard. It was so loud that it turned into this vocalizing squeak/coo that sounded like a tribble. So funny.

Tubby is a 3 year old female. Sometimes I interrupt nap time and it is not appreciated.

Sparkles is a 9 year old female. She has been on my list to photograph for several weeks now and I just keep missing her. Poor girl has been waiting quite a while for a home!

Silver is an 8 year old male. He was another of those overly friendly kitties who was hard to get a picture of. He is a big guy…not overweight, just really long.

Noelle is a sweet 9 year old female.

Lolo is an 8 month old male and is SO FLUFFY!!!

Boo is a 5 year old male. So fitting for this Halloween week!

Last but not least is Little Pumpkin, a 1 year old female.

Taking her photo reminded me of this moment from Toy Story:

Hahaha she was so sweet though!

Halloween 2015

This is my 4th year doing a photoshoot for my kids for Halloween. Every year I seriously stress out about this. They are so squirmy and could care less about the costumes. But somehow in the end it works out. This year I had to have a pep talk with my husband before we started “Ok, listen. This is going to be hard. But I don’t want to hear any ‘we can’ts’ or ‘this isn’t going to happen’. Because we’re doing this. And it’s going to be awesome.” So…it happened. And here it is!:

Hahaha I love it. I was only able to get separate photos of Jude (3 years old) wearing his wings and then his hood, so I had to merge those together in photoshop. He was running around like a maniac. The only way I could get him to stop and focus was by turning on Sesame Street on my phone and holding it above the camera lens.

Ollie (1 year old) was happy to stand still as long as we fed him a steady stream of fruit snacks. However, he refused to wear his head piece so I made my husband model it 🙂

I found the Andy’s room background hi-res by just doing a Google image search. Then to finalize it there were lots of little tweaks like putting in shadows under their feet, making Ollie’s pants longer, making the toes on Jude’s socks bright green to match, etc!

The Cat With Thumbs

Another trip to the Humane Society of West Michigan! I think it’s official: I’m allergic to cats. I go into the cat rooms and I turn into a sneezing, nose running like a faucet, scratchy eyes kind of hot mess. I’ve had cats my entire life and it hasn’t been until the last couple months I’ve had a problem. I am going to just push through it. I love kitties waaaayyy too much. Benadryl knocks me under the table. I’m going to have to find something else. Any suggestions?

I will start this post off with my favorite cat yet. Her name is Mittens, she is 6 years old, and I really really really love her (hint hint to my husband). She has thumbs!!! She is a polydactyl cat. She is so sweet, so soft, has the loudest purr, and laid on my lap for a long time. I felt a little guilty spending so much time with her and taking away from the other cats, but she is seriously the best.

There is a litter of kittens in the main lobby. They are 2 months old. Little Thing and Tinsley are female and Mal is a male. I was told they are semi feral, but I think if they are adopted at such a young age they might warm up to people.

Luna is a sweet, shy 3 year old girl. I think she is very anxious at the Humane Society. It looks like she has licked and pulled most of her fur off of her hind section. Just a guess that is what has happened. My mom had a cat that compulsively licked herself because of anxiety. We had to give her Xanax every day. It may also be that she has allergies or at one time had parasites. Whatever the cause, I’m sure there is something that can be done to help her fur grow back! She has such a pretty face.

Izzy is a 5 year old female. She wasn’t on my list to photograph, but she was right out in the open looking so cute, so I had to snap her picture.

Gracie and Gabby are a mom/baby duo but I think can be adopted separately. They are both very friendly. Gabby, the 2-1/2 month old baby is so cute but so naughty. When I first walked in the room, Gabby started climbing my leg like a tree. Then she wouldn’t stop playing with my camera strap. Then she started chewing on my camera bag. I laughed a lot while I was in there.

Mac is a 7 year old male. His picture was a quick snap and go. I didn’t have much time to learn his personality, but he seemed nice.

Cubic is a 4 month old female. She was very sweet and so sleepy. I took her picture quickly and let her rest.

I love the cats with unusual names. This family didn’t disappoint! Omelette is a 1 year old momma. The kittens, Scramble and Egg, are 2 months old. They had just gotten out of surgery, so I tried to take their pictures in their cage without disturbing them too much.

Rescue Waggin’

Today was a really great day at the Humane Society of West Michigan! My amazingly talented friend Jen of Jen Q Photography joined me to take photos of some really cute animals. While we were there, the Rescue Waggin’ arrived! It was a happy coincidence that we were at the same place at the same time. The Rescue Waggin’ is a charity that takes unwanted animals from shelters that are overrun, and places them in shelters that have room. The dogs that arrived today came from Kentucky. There were so many puppies!!! I was way too excited about that.

It was hard to pull myself away from the puppies but we needed to get pictures. So first up was Boo. He is a 5 year old male. He was shy and sweet.

Fidget is an 8 year old female. She is a very large old lady, but quite nice.

Loki is a 6 year old male American Staffordshire. In honor of National Adopt a Dog Month and National Pit Bull Awareness Month, all Pitties/American Staffordshire Terriers that are 5 months and older will have a reduced adoption fee to $50 for the month of October!

Zena is a 9 year old female, which makes her eligible to be a Silver Paw at the Humane Society! All senior silver paw dogs are free (you only pay for their dog license).

Bud is a 3-1/2 year old jack russell / beagle mix. He is eager to please and loves treats! He has two different ears. It totally reminded me of Stephen Colbert. Love that man.

Last but not least, Max is a 5 year old long haired chihuahua. He is just a tiny puff ball on legs, so cute!

Fluff & Air

Today was my third trip to the Humane Society of West Michigan. I am having so much fun volunteering! There were several kitties I almost brought home with me. You’ll see why in the pics below…

Blitz Winter is a 3 month old female. I swear kittens are made of fluff and air. This one was PERFECT. She just got out of surgery and was a little loopy, but soooo sweet and friendly. I could die. I love her.

Frederick is a 3 year old male. He was so soft and had the best purr. I probably spent the longest with this guy just because he was eating up the attention.

Buster is a 10 year old male. He was in a room with two other cats, and he was by far the biggest social butterfly. I had to take pictures of all the cats in that room and he wouldn’t stop photo bombing the other cats. He was great.

Lulu is an 8 year old female torti. She was so cute curled up napping in her cage, I felt bad waking her up. She was a sweetie though, and obliged for some shots.

Muffin is a 10 year old male. He is a very big guy. His eyes are the opposite of being cross-eyed. I didn’t know the term for that and I Googled it. It is called “divergent strabismus”. The more you know.

Rita is a 9 year old female. She was nice and tolerated me, but aloof.

Lilly is an 8 year old female. She is a sweet cat, but scared at the shelter. She doesn’t like surprises and can be skittish. The picture I got of her face cracks me up. She looks like she’s smiling!

Pepper is a 1 year old male. He was really chill and happy in his bed, so I just let him be and grabbed a couple quick shots before heading on to the next.

Polly is a 5 year old female. I walked into her room and I couldn’t find her. Turns out she had somehow flipped over her cardboard box so she was trapped inside! Poor girl. She was happy to be freed.

Pumpkin_NameSweetie and Pumpkin are 10 year old sisters and will be adopted as a pair. They are two of the biggest cats I have ever seen. They look almost identical except Pumpkin has a white spot on her back. They are both very calm and happy.

The Dog That Looks Like Zuul

Today I stopped by the Humane Society of West Michigan to photograph several of their adoptable dogs! I was secretly hoping for puppies. But not this time. I found out they go so fast; the real need is for pictures of the older dogs.

This is Bear. He is a 1 year old sweetie pie. He still has that soft puppy fur. The description on his kennel said he was “shy” but I thought he was very affectionate and friendly! He loved to be pet and he still has quite a bit of puppy energy.

Next I met Cole. He is a black mix. Of what I am not quite sure. I think he is half lab / half Zuul. For real you guys. If you are fans of The Ghostbusters, please adopt and rename him Zuul. That would be amazing. He is a playful 7 month old. He loves belly rubs!

Joseph is a beautiful Great Pyrenees. He is 6 years old and is a gentle giant. I think he could pass as a polar bear. A Chinese zoo tried to pass a dog off as a lion, so why not? I had a hard time getting a photo of him by himself because all he wanted to do was lean on us and be pet. Joseph is heart worm positive but is being treated and will go on to be a happy, healthy guy.

Last but not least, meet Alpine! She is a 1.5 year old with the craziest tongue I’ve ever seen. It is hilarious!!! She is STRONG, has spunk and loves to play.

Zoey, our newly adopted dog, follows me everywhere. I can’t even pee without an audience (not that that is anything new because I also live with toddlers). A lot of times after I put the boys to bed I go downstairs to take photos for my Etsy shop. Zoey is always right there with me.

Tonight she begged me to take a glamour shot of her. I swear. She made me do it you guys.

My First Day

Today was my first day as a volunteer photographer at the Humane Society of West Michigan! I had been thinking of volunteering for several months now, but it wasn’t until we adopted our dog Zoey two weeks ago from the Humane Society that I really pursued it. Being a stay-at-home mom, I really wanted more “mommy me time” get away options. I mean, going to the grocery store by myself is amazing, but I guess I wanted more variety. I am hoping to make this a weekly thing as long as the hubs can stay home to watch the kids.

Meet Zoey! She is our 7 year old beagle / german shepherd mix. I am obsessed with her. She is just the best.

For my first day at the Humane Society I got a brief tour, a few tips, and was set loose. They gave me a list of 7 or 8 cats that didn’t have photos for their website. The first cat I attempted to photograph was a major fail. His name was Rascal. I opened his cage and this snarling beast greeted me, daring me to reach in so he could eat my hand. A staff member stopped me and pointed to the “Staff Only” sign. Apparently some of the animals are labeled and volunteers aren’t supposed to handle them. Oops! I quickly closed his cage and went on to the next.

Galaxie was a very large 10 year old male. He was so sweet and clung to me like he never wanted me to let him go. He was a challenge to photograph because he was black, the lighting wasn’t great, and he just wanted to hide. But I think I got a few that work. They don’t do him justice to show how big he is.

Next I met Gabby. She was a roly poly pastel calico. She looks like my cat Pixel…but much more round. She was very scared, but enjoyed some loving.

Buggs was a really cool guy. He has the best beard ever. Doesn’t he look like a wizard?! How can you not fall in love with that?

My last stop before I ran out of time was Fred Darling. He was in the lobby where there was natural light, yay! He was very chill and wasn’t interested in moving from his comfy bed. After the world’s longest staring contest, he finally moved so I could capture his cute white belly and paws.
